Joey Beltran (14-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) is returning to the UFC, and this time he’ll fight as a light heavyweight.
UFC officials on Monday announced that Beltran has been tapped as a replacement for Brandon Vera (14-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and will now face James Te Huna at UFC on FUEL TV 4.
Vera was recently pulled from the matchup in favor of a UFC on FOX 4 matchup with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, allowing Beltran to step in and fill the gap.
Featuring a key middleweight matchup between Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman, UFC on FUEL TV 4 takes place July 11 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The night’s main card airs on FUEL TV, and preliminary bouts are expected to stream on Facebook.
Beltran makes a quick return to the UFC following a January release. “The Mexicutioner,” who fought in the octagon seven times as a heavyweight, opened his UFC career with wins over Rolles Gracie and Tim Hague. However, a 1-4 stretched followed, and the 30-year-old was released from the promotion.
Beltran reinvented himself as a 205-pounder at an April C3 Fights event, earning a decision win over Anton Talamante. He’ll now look to build on that momentum in his return to the UFC.
Te Huna returns to action on the strength of an impressive two-fight win streak that includes a March win over Aaron Rosa in Te Huna’s native Australia, as well as a September 2011 victory over Ricardo Romero. Te Huna is 8-1 in his past nine overall fights, with the one lone loss coming to recent UFC on FUEL TV 2 headliner, Alexander Gustafsson. Below is the night’s full card line up.
Preliminary Card:
Alex Caceres vs. Damacio Page
Nick Penner and Tom DeBlass
Rafael Natal vs. Andrew Craig
Chris Cariaso vs. Josh Ferguson
Rapahel Assuncao vs. Issei Tamura
Main Card:
James Te Huna vs. Joey Beltran
Aaron Simpson vs. Kenny Robertson
Anthony Njokuani vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
T.J. Dillashaw vs. Vaughan Lee
Karlos Vemola vs. Francis Carmont
Chris Weidman vs. Mark Munoz
