The highly anticipated “King of the Ring” promotion made it’s Hawaii debut on Friday, May 4 at the Waipahu Filipino Community Center. The venue has been home to a countless number of similar events, but was a much different “Filcom” from the place fighters and fans have become comfortable in.
With pre-fight live music, a delegated entrance to the fighter holding pen, walk-out stage, curtains and professional lighting as well as a number of other welcome changes, the amateur event had the feel of something much bigger.
The card was originally stacked with 20 kickboxing bouts, but proceeded with 17 on fight night, most of which went the distance. The event showcased some of the best amateur stand-up skills on the island. The fight of the night award went to the 160lb three-round battle between Joseph Hopps and Cranston Takayama, which ended in a draw. Hawaii Fight Gear awarded the two competitors with new gear for their efforts. The only knockout for the evening came in the second round of the Semi-Main Event courtesy of Desi-Minor.
Congratulations to all of the competitors and to the King of the Ring promoters. The next event will held in July under the better-known title “King of the Cage,” and will consist of both professional and amateur MMA bouts. MMA Absolute will keep you updated as the card develops.
