Former boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho was shot almost to death in deadly car ambush that resulted his driver killed on Tuesday night in Puerto Rico. Camacho was rushed in Centro Medico de Rio Piedras in San Juan and currently in critical condition according toElnuevodia.
Camacho was unconscious condition and expected to survive but could be paralyzed from the shooting, as told by Dr. Ernesto Torres, the hospital director.
The Camacho car ambushed happened around 7:00pm in nearby shopping center of Plaza del Sol in Bayamon, when one gunman got out from a gray Jeep Cherokee and opened fire on Camacho’s Mustang vehicle. The name of the driver who was killed immediately after the shooting is not known yet.
Camacho who was in the passenger seat apparently got struck with a bullet in the jaw which exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae, according to the source. There were no arrest yet reported as of this time on the suspects.
Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho boxing career has benn impressive in the boxing world especially in Puerto Rico. He’s record speaks for itself with 79-6-3 and earned 38 wins by knockout. Camacho fought legendary Roberto Duran twice, the second of which sent Duran into retirement. He held multiple championship belts, and even knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard and went head-to-head with Felix Trinidad andOscar De La Hoya during the twilight of his career.
Camacho’s fame was implicated and marred by drug and alcohol problems during a career that haunts until his retirement. Camacho has run into the law several times with case from burglary of a computer store in Mississippi to drug ecstasy found in his car and domestic abuse complaints from his wife several years ago.
He’s last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in1997, a loss by unanimous decision. Born in Bayamon, the 50 years old Camacho has been planning to cameback in the ring, he supposed to fight two years ago in Denmark until his opponent pulled out and that his team were looking at a possible bout in 2013, but sad to say that his bullet-wound now will prohibit him for a future comeback fight.
