“He’s different to anyone I’ve fought with his particular style because I’ve been fighting at world level and people with his style don’t usually get to that level. He’s a pressure fighter – like John Ruiz – and I put him on his ass in 25 seconds.”
That was the brash talking British Heavyweight prizefighter, 31-year-old David ‘Haye-Maker’ Haye, discussing his upcoming, July-14, grudge-match-opponent, Dereck Chisora, in a recent interview with the Daily Star.
The grudge match stems from an incident where Haye made news around the world by being involved in a glassing incident against the 28-year-old British—by way of Zimbabwe—fighter, Chisora.
The incident, a mini-riot of sorts, took place during Chisora’s post-fight press-conference in Munich, Germany, earlier this year after his loss to Wlad Klitschko’s older brother Vitali Klitschko.
Haye, who’s a a former WBA Heavyweight Champion, a former Unified World Cruiser-weight Champion, and the former European Cruiser-weight Champion, lost his WBA belt a year ago, July 2, 2011, to Ukrainian Superstar Wladimir Klitschko in a fight at Imtech Arena, Altona, Hamburg; a loss which Haye has since blamed on a toe-injury.
Most of the news surrounding Haye since the loss to Klitschko has not been good. Including his issuing his retirement from the sport.

Now, in the interview with the Daily Star, Haye is vowing to beat-up Chisora again when the pair meet next Saturday:
“I think this fight will be one of my most entertaining. My recent fights haven’t been the most explosive for one reason or another but no doubt about it, this will not go the distance in a million years. I will win by a knockout – definitely – and I’m looking forward to entertaining you people,”..said the boastful Brit, Haye.
“Nine times out of ten my strategies work and I’ve got one for this. People are going to be quite surprised from the opening bell. They’re going to be pleasantly surprised. If he’s lucky enough to hear the bell for the end of the first round he will realize, ‘I’ve never been hit this hard before.’ The same as when he got buzzed in the first round against Robert Helenius in December, he will get it 15 times against me,” Haye Continued.
As for Chisora, he had this to report: “People like freak shows. We’re selling a freak show and if people want to watch, they want to watch, we don’t care. The only recognition I need is from my parents. I’m respected in my own community and that’s all I care about. Nobody else’s opinion matters. The moment the bell rings I’m going to be all over David Haye. He knows there’s not going to be any games.”
*As for my personal perspective. The bottom line here is one we’ve heard too many times, and is fast-becoming a cliche.‘Boxing doesn’t need anymore black-eyes.’
However, who doesn’t love a great heavyweight grudge match?
And if this British grudge-match can be settled in a gentlemanly fashion..and provide good heavyweight boxing entertainment for us hardcore fans, then I can’t wait.
Hopefully, this time the fight will take place—not in the audience, but inside the ring. With eight, or ten-ounce boxing gloves..and without the use of a broken-beer-bottle.
Stay tuned.
